Waterton Park Golf Club
About the club
The parkland course is sited on the world's first nature reserve created by Charles Waterton in 1820. Waterton was a pioneering Victorian naturalist and genuine eccentric, he dedicated his life to preserving the local wildlife in this area, and today the park still teems with all manner of creatures. Sir David Attenborough the broadcaster and naturalist visited Waterton Park in March 2013 when he opened the £31m Wakefield City Museum. The museum has a section dedicated to Squire Waterton and his collection and Sir David said: "Charles Waterton was little known not only internationally but, shamefully, in this country too. But he was a great and important figure.
